Sponsor Visas refer to visas that require the employment and sponsorship of an Australian employer.

Importantly, there is more than one Sponsor Visa option to Australia; however an applicant’s eligibility for each visa will depend on their specific circumstances.

Accordingly, the three main options that current exist for migrants to be sponsored are as follows:

  1. Subclass 457
  2. Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)
  3. Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 187)

Commonly, migrants will prefer to apply for a Sponsored Visa that will grant them permanent residency in the first instance as this will secure their and their families future in the country. Accordingly, the two Sponsor visas that currently grant permanent residency in the first instance are the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) and Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 187).  However, applying for these visas directly requires applicants to meet higher thresholds and visa criteria, such as increased English, skill and work experience requirements. For those reasons, migrants may be required to apply for a Subclass 457 visa which can be used as a ‘stepping stone’ to eventually applying for permanent residency under more lenient and relaxed criteria (see our blog here for more information on transitioning from a 457 visa to permanent residency).

To make things clear and simple (it’s what we do), we have designed an easy to read Sponsor Visa Flow Chart which will hopefully lead you to the appropriate Sponsored Visa for your specific circumstances.
