Picture
If you're a skilled migrant and are looking to migrate to Australia without the sponsorship of an employer, then there are several visa options that may be available to you. Importantly, each of the visas discussed below all share the following common criteria:

  1. You must obtain a Migration Skills Assessment
  2. You must have an occupation on a list of skilled occupations
  3. You must meet a points test pass mark
  4. You must be Invited to apply for the visa by the Australian Government

Subclass 189
The Subclass 189 is a permanent Skilled Visa and arguably the most beneficial of the three Skilled Migrant Visas to Australia. Once granted the visa, an individuals permanent residence is not subject to certain limitations imposed on Subclass 190 or Subclass 489 visa holders discussed below.

Subclass 190
The Subclass 190 is also a permanent Skilled Visa, however, as applicants are sponsored by an Australian State/Territory, they are obligated to live in reside in that State/Territory for a certain period of time after grant. Often, applicants that cannot qualify for the Subclass 189 directly will utilise the Subclass 190 as another means to gain permanent residency.

Subclass 489
The Subclass 489 is a temporary Skilled Visa that allows applicants to be sponsored by an Australian State/Territory, or an eligible family member residing in a designated area in Australia. The benefit of applying for a Subclass 489 visa is that it awards applicants additional points towards their pass mark and can lead to permanent residency if applicants reside in a regional area after the grant of their visa.
